Hong Kong's favourite drink comes under spotlight at tea fair

 Tea lovers are set for a treat at Hong Kong's first international tea fair when nearly 250 exhibitors from 10 countries pay homage to the city's favourite drink, a media report said Thursday. The fair, due to run August 13-15, is to focus on all things tea, the Hong Kong edition of the China Daily newspaper said.

Tea prices on the increase despite recessionary times

The staple beverage of households across the region is set to rise in the coming months. Tea prices at the world's leading commodity centres surged in June, pushing up auction averages across Calcutta, Colombo and Mombasa to record levels – last seen a year ago. Unseasonal droughts, possibly as a result of worldwide Climate Change, and insufficient fertiliser application in 2008 on the back of record high oil prices, have resulted in dramatic harvest cuts this year. This has lead to a decrease in the availability of black tea in world markets and an increase in prices, as demand continues to steadily grow.

As if better skin, a stronger immune system, protection against cancer, blindness, cavities, high cholesterol, and heart disease weren’t reason enough, new research published by the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism provides another great reason to drink white tea: weight loss.

Black tea helps fight diabetes

Chinese researchers published a study report in the Journal of Food Science suggesting that black tea may be used to control diabetes.

Haixia Chen and colleagues from Tianjin Key Laboratory in China found that polysaccharides in black tea had the most glucose-inhibiting properties compared to green and oolong teas.

Thai tea and how to make it.

Thai tea is another tea-based beverage that is beginning to gain in popularity in San Jose and the rest of California.  How is Thai tea different from other types of tea? According to Kim Pham, co-owner of Kalesia Tea Lounge in Florida, Thai tea is Chinese black tea, brewed with cardamom, anise, and cinnamon, and perhaps with vanilla or orange blossoms as well, colored orange with orange food coloring, and served with a sweetener, usually also with a milk product, and almost always over ice. It is one of the most popular tea drinks in the United States, and is available in dry powdered mix form, as well as ready-to-drink in bottles and cans.
