Chamomile tea is a popular herbal tea that has been well known throughout history for its medicinal properties. It has a distinctly light apple-like scent, a mildly sweet and pleasant taste and is naturally caffeine free. Although there are two types of Chamomile plants (German and Roman Chamomile, which are actually two different species) Chamomile tea is typically made from the German Chamomile plant.

Chamomile tea is probably best known for its calming and soothing qualities and is a wonderful tea to sip on at the end a long and stressful day. Because of it’s gently sweet taste there is really no need to add a sweetener, but some people enjoy drinking it with a little added honey.

Besides helping to relieve tension, Chamomile tea also has anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties and is helpful for headaches, digestive problems such as heartburn or nausea, and for women’s menstrual discomfort. However it should not be used to replace traditional medical care and if symptoms such as those mentioned are persistent or become acute then it’s important to contact your family doctor.

Aside from its helpful properties, Chamomile tea is also just a nice, aromatic cup of herbal tea to enjoy at any time and brewing it properly is very easy to do. Chamomile tea in a teabag is one of its most common forms but you can also buy loose dried Chamomile, which is sold in bulk bins at most health food stores.

To make a cup of Chamomile tea it’s important to use water that is very hot but not boiling because boiling water can destroy the therapeutic properties of the Chamomile herb. If you prefer using loose dried Chamomile add two teaspoons of it to an individual tea infuser. Add the infuser, or a teabag if you’re using this instead, to your cup and pour in the heated water. Let it steep for about five minutes and then it’s ready to drink. Some people prefer covering their cup while it’s steeping in order to hold in even more healthful properties that may be carried away by the steam, but the choice is up to you.

Chamomile tea is also very delicious when blended with other herbs such as peppermint, spearmint, lemon grass or rosehips. Either used on its own or as a blend, Chamomile tea is definitely a timeless favorite.
