Its main species include Wuyi Narcissus, the Red Robe and so on, among which the Red Robe is the most precious one. It is said that in Ming Dynasty, there was a scholar (provincial graduate) being sick in Wuyi Mountain when he was on the way to take part in the examination held in the capital; then he met a monk who gave him the Red Robe Tea for drinking to cure his acute abdomen pain. The effect was so good that when he hit the Number One Scholar, he came back to Wuyi Mountain and extended his gratitude to the monk. When he knew where the tea trees were planted, he took off the Red Robe he wore as being the Number One Scholar, walked around the tea trees for three circles, and then put the robe on the trees. That is why we now have a tea called “Red Robe”.

Every year the director of county will host the ceremony on the date of “Insects Awaken” (according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar); after that, the gongs and drums will be beaten while the firecrackers sounded and the red candles ignited; the tea peasants would gather by the foot of platform and shout “Tea sprouts! Tea sprouts!” to pray for the harvest and good-quality of Wuyi Rock Tea to the Tea God. Hence the name.
Kaishan is celebrated within three days of “Summer Begins” (Date of Chinese Lunar Calendar). According to the convention, the workers in tea plant will get up early at the dawn on that day and start to keep silence; after the general washing, the supervisor of tea plant will take all workers for cense worship before Yan Taibai (it is said that he was the ancestor of tea industry of Wuyi Mountain); afterwards, the breakfast is served, and all people are led by the special person to go to the tea garden and begin to pick the tea leaves separately. When the sun rises and the due disappears, that special person will distribute the smoke among all tea-picking workers, which means “we can talk now”. Only until this moment is Hanshan ceremony over.
